Abbey Villa and Ards Rangers share the spoils

Rangers’ Ciaran Gillan beats two Villa players to the ball

Abbey Villa FC and Ards Rangers FC played out yet another draw in their latest Northern Amateur Football League Premier Division encounter, with the sides finishing 1-1 after a closely contested clash at Adams Park.

Following previous 1-1 draws between the teams in October and April, this latest derby meeting continued the trend on a bright but chilly Saturday afternoon. Rangers, wearing an unusual all-black strip, started strongly and controlled much of the early play, putting the Villa defence under pressure in the opening stages.

Despite efforts from Ross Arthurs and Ryan Convery to push Abbey Villa forward, it was the visitors who dictated the tempo. Around the half-hour mark, Ciaran Gillan and Stephen Cockcroft combined well down the left, allowing Alexander McIlmail to fire Ards Rangers into the lead.

Abbey Villa responded after the break, with Gregg Fleming driving the home side forward in search of an equaliser. Ryan Convery went close with a curling effort, while Arthurs remained a constant attacking threat. However, Rangers continued to hold firm, with Aaron Dunlop and Jay Dalzell helping maintain their advantage.

As Villa increased the pressure, goalkeeper Marc Orbinson was called into action, producing a solid save to deny Convery. Matthew Dempster also stayed alert at the back, while McIlmail continued to threaten on the counter with driving runs forward.

The breakthrough for the hosts finally came in the 64th minute when Casey Courtney found the net to level the score. With over 25 minutes remaining, both sides pushed for a winner, but neither could find the decisive goal.

Rangers pressed again through Cockcroft and Dunlop, but McIlmail’s effort drifted wide, while Arthurs continued to inspire Villa’s attacking play. In the end, despite both teams showing attacking intent, the match finished 1-1—continuing a recent run of identical results between the sides.

The game also saw the emergence of the “Villa Ultras,” a lively group of young supporters who added to the atmosphere with drums and vocal backing, bringing extra energy to the Adams Park touchline.
