A LOCAL boxing club has paid tribute to the power of social media in helping it to secure new premises.

Earlier this year, the future of Ards Boxing Club was thrown into doubt as a result of plans for a new social housing development at the location of its home for the last 14 years, on North Street in the town centre.

The proposal is set to see the demolition of premises at 4 and 6C North Street to provide for six dwellings as well as a change of use for existing premises at 12 Frances Street and 2 North Street to provide a further four apartments.

Having been served notice to vacate its premises by February 2026, the club’s founder and head coach Stevie Quinn issued an appeal for the community to come forward with ideas for suitable new premises.

That plea was answered last week, with the club due to relocate to a unit owned by Dot Cotton’s laundrette on Brewery Lane in the new year, less than half a mile away from their former base.

Stevie previously told the Chronicle that the possibility of losing the club would have been a blow to the many young members who rely upon it. Now looking ahead to a more positive future, he said: “It’s great news as I thought we were finished. We looked at other premises but there wasn’t much about and what there was was far too expensive.

“We are teaching kids about respect and discipline, so it’s about much more than just boxing. It has been a godsend.”

Echoing Mr Quinn’s sentiments, Newtownards independent councillor Steven Irvine heaped praise on the work the club carries out in the community.

“I am over the moon for the club,” he said.

“I know that both parents and the local PSNI have both complimented the work which they are doing, and I have seen first-hand young people who have had a huge change in character since becoming involved in boxing.”
