WINNING the Belfast Telegraph Sports Award for club initiative of the year 2026 was an
incredibly proud and emotional moment for everyone connected to Ards FC Inclusion.
To receive recognition alongside so many talented and accomplished sporting individuals and organisations from across Northern Ireland was a huge honour.
Sharing the evening with figures such as, Carl Frampton, Martin O’Neill, Gerry Armstrong, Billy Hamilton, Sammy McIlroy and Lady Mary Peters made the occasion even more special.
Ards FC Inclusion was established in 2020, with just seven players. Today, the team boasts
approximately 35 male and female players, with ages ranging from 16 to those in their 50s.
The team is open to individuals with learning difficulties and disabilities, and over the past six years, it has grown into far more than simply a football team.
While the team is proud to have won numerous Inclusion League titles, firstly under the Irish FA structure and now within the SBYL, along with receiving the Irish FA Football for All Award in2024, the greatest achievements go far beyond trophies and medals.
From the very beginning, Ards FC Inclusion’s aim has been to use football as a vehicle to drive positive change and create opportunities for people who may otherwise feel isolated or excluded.
The team provides a close-knit support network, where players feel valued, included and
empowered both on and off the pitch.
It works closely with parents, guardians, social work teams and care workers, supporting players in many different aspects of life, including education, mental health challenges and addiction support.
Seeing players grow in confidence, build friendships, and achieve personal milestones
continues to be the most rewarding aspect.
This award belongs to every single player, coach, volunteer, family member and supporter
connected to Ards FC Inclusion. The players are a true inspiration, with their positivity, resilience and enthusiasm.
Ards FC Inclusion’s doors are always open to future players, and the team encourages anyone interested in exploring the opportunity to get in touch.
