Award presented to hospital midwife

AN ULSTER Hospital ward sister has received the Hazel McCalister Exceptional Midwife Award for her dedicated care for new mothers and their babies.

Receiving the prestigious accolade on May 15 was Julie Dunlop, a midwife who leads a small team at the emergency obstetric unit at the hospital.

Presenting the award to Julie was John McAlister, husband of Hazel, a renowned local midwife.

The Royal College of Midwives’ South Eastern HSC Trust Branch launched the award in February 2022, a year following the passing of Hazel.

Offering her thanks to the person who nominated her, Julie said: “This award means a huge amount to me, and it means a lot to be acknowledged by colleagues for the work that I do.

“I lead a small but excellent team in the emergency obstetric unit, and I would like to thank whoever nominated me for this award.  It is a huge honour to be presented with this,” added the credited midwife.

John said it was great that Hazel has left a legacy and this award acts as a catalyst for midwives in the Trust.

“Hazel cared deeply about the wellbeing of her colleagues, and it is important to acknowledge this through the award,” added John.
