Ards manager John Bailie has expressed satisfaction with the club’s early transfer activity, despite losing several key players during the current window.
The Red and Blues are building on a strong 2024/25 campaign which saw them secure a top-half finish in the Championship and reach the semi-finals of the Irish Cup. With sights set on continued progress, Ards have already added Paul Donnelly, Jack Reilly, Jamie Browne, and Steven Gordon to their squad.
The club is also expected to bolster its goalkeeping ranks with the arrivals of James Taylor (Bangor) and Adam Ritchie (Ballyclare Comrades).
However, the off-season hasn’t been without setbacks. Top scorer Aidan Steele has joined Carrick Rangers in the Premiership, while goalkeeper Alex Moore has moved to Portadown. Forwards Ross Hunter and Lee Newell, along with fan favourite Kyle Calderwood, have also departed.
Despite those exits, Bailie remains optimistic.
“It’s difficult because you speak to so many players during the off-season and it can take a long time to get an answer,” he said.
“The guys who have come in were all very keen to commit quickly which is a massive positive for us.”
Bailie also highlighted the importance of continuity, with a strong core from last season returning — including captain Michael Ruddy, playmaker Eamon Scannell, and defensive stalwarts Connor Maxwell and Max Greer.
“We had a better season last year and it was important that we kept the nucleus of that squad together,” Bailie added.
“You’re always going to lose players — Aidan made it clear he wanted to test himself at a higher level, and it was the same for Alex. We wish them the very best.
“With Ross and Lee moving on, we know we have a bit of a void up front, but there’s no panic. Pre-season is only beginning and there’ll be plenty of movement across teams.
“I’ve always said that what we bring in has to be better than what we’ve already got, and so far I’m pleased with the business we’ve done.”
Ards will kick off their pre-season schedule this Saturday (July 5, 2pm) with a hometown friendly against Ards Rangers at Drome Park.
