KIRKISTOWN Castle Golf Club’s Beth Coulter has made history with a victory on her professional debut, winning the Women’s Irish Challenge at Malahide Golf Club on Friday.
Just days after turning professional, the 22 year-old went the distance to pip South Korea’s Ayeon Yang to the title by way of a playoff in the LET Access Series (LETAS), becoming the first Irish female to win a professional tournament on home soil.
Coulter’s success at the County Dublin course was the product of three days of pure grit and determination.
After posting scores of 73 and 67 in the opening two rounds, she found herself occupying second place, just one shot behind Slovakian leader Michaele Vavrova.
Feeling the pressure from the chasing pack, Vavrova failed to consolidate her position atop the leaderboard, and Coulter grasped the opportunity to kickstart her career in the best possible way.
Although an eagle at the sixth hole was negated by a bogey eitherside of it, the Arizona State University alumnus showcased her resilience with birdies at the 11th and 17th, finishing on five-under-par and forcing the sudden-death contest with joint-leader Yang.
There was seemingly only one winner from there, as Coulter dazzled spectators on the par-five 18th hole, lasering her second to within 20 feet of the pin.
A two-putt was good enough for birdie four and with her opponent only managing a bogey six, the Kirkistown star clinched victory on the first playoff hole.
“It probably hasn’t sunk in yet. This was the goal at the start of the week, and to actually do it is pretty crazy,” Coulter said of her historic victory.
“I haven’t won in a while, so it’s kind of nice to get back into the winner’s circle again. To do it on my pro debut is really, really special.
“To win on home soil, in front of so many family, friends and Irish supporters, it’s incredibly special and something I’ll remember forever.”
Coulter continued: “The atmosphere all week was amazing and the support I’ve received has been incredible.
“The course was in fantastic condition and the greens and Malahide were probably the best I’ve played on since coming back to Europe.”
A professional victory at the first attempt is certainly no mean feat, but it may not come as such a surprise to those who have followed Coulter’s career thus far.
The Women’s Irish Challenge adds an extra special look to her achievements of being Ireland’s top-ranked female amateur and helping Great Britain and Ireland beat the USA in the Curtis Cup at Sunningdale in 2024.
What’s more, this latest success gets her up and running in the LETAS Order of Merit, which will see the top seven players automatically claim a Ladies European Tour card come the end of the season.
Coulter will look to build upon the ideal start to her professional career at the CSK Steel Women’s Open in Himmerland, Denmark, this week.
