Boxing club’s future under threat

Development plans could see Ards institution forced to find new premises

THE potential loss of a ‘transformative’ local boxing club would be a huge blow to the community, a councillor for the area has said.

Ards Boxing Club faces an uncertain future as a result of plans for a new social housing development at the location of its current North Street site in the town centre.

The proposal, which is currently under consideration by Ards and North Down Council, would see the demolition of premises at 4 and 6C North Street to provide for six dwellings as well as a change of use for existing premises at 12 Frances Street and 2 North Street to provide a further four apartments.

Stevie Quinn, who founded Ards Boxing Club in 2012 and also serves as the head coach, said that any possible move away from the site would be ‘tough’ for the club’s many young members in particular who rely heavily on it.

He also stressed that to find new premises able to cater for a boxing ring and other related equipment would be very challenging.

Newtownards independent councillor Steven Irvine has worked closely with the club since it was established 13 years ago and said its impact reaches beyond just sport.

“This club is so much more than just a place to train or compete,” he told the Chronicle.

“Under the expert coaching of Stevie Quinn and his dedicated team, Ards Boxing Club has produced real boxing talent and has also played a transformative role in the lives of many young people.

“I know for a fact that several young individuals who were previously in trouble with the police found new direction and purpose through the discipline, structure and support the club offers,” Mr Irvine added.

“That kind of positive community impact is hard to measure and even harder to replace. While it is encouraging to see more social housing planned for the town – something I fully support – I am deeply concerned that this vital local club may be left without a home.

“Losing this club would be a huge blow to our community in Newtownards.”

Issuing an appeal to the community to support the club in the event that the plans proceed, Mr Irvine continued: “I am calling on developers, local business owners, or anyone with suitable premises to come forward and help find a new home for Ards Boxing Club.

“If you have a space or an idea that could help, please get in touch with me or with Stevie Quinn directly.”
