THE iconic Open Championship trophy visited Newtownards last week as part of Golf Ireland’s ‘The Road to The Open’ initiative.
The two-week tour, which kicked off on Friday with an event in the Ards Blair Mayne Leisure and Wellbeing Complex, will visit clubs and groups across the island of Ireland ahead of The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush this summer, giving those in attendance a chance to get a close look at one of the game’s most historic prizes.
Six years after Portrush and Northern Ireland last hosted the oldest golf tournament in the world, Golf Ireland CEO Mark Kennelly described the return of The Open in July as a ‘significant moment’.
“Events like these highlight the vital role golf clubs play in connecting communities and creating a lasting legacy. The return of The Open is a significant moment and Golf Ireland aims to maximise its positive impact, inspiring future generations of golfers,” he said.
“Through ‘The Road to The Open’, we are looking to create excitement across clubs, schools, and communities, ensuring its impact resonates far beyond the tournament itself.”
Director of Development and Club Support at Golf Ireland, Vincent Foley, added: “This tour is part of Golf Ireland’s broader commitment to grassroots engagement and supporting our clubs.
“We are particularly excited about elements like virtual reality golf experiences, putting simulators and other interactive activities our teams may deliver at these events, making golf accessible and fun for all.”
