A NEW community-led initiative improving the image of the West Winds estate in Newtownards is underway, with support from the Housing Executive.
Re-imaging of a number of paramilitary murals has taken place, as centre-stage is given to local historical imagery and artwork reflecting the strong heritage and aspirations of those living in the area.
Three conflict related images have already been replaced and, with support from the Housing Executive’s Community Cohesion team, wider community engagement activities are also planned.
Billy Sproule, Chairperson of West Winds Development Association said it is a ‘very positive step forward’ and that the group believes that long term, positive change is possible.
“We believe this begins with transforming how the estate is seen both by residents and those from outside,” said Mr Sproule.
“We hope to promote a safer and more welcoming environment through the removal of previous murals and the introduction of historical and community-themed murals instead.
“This initiative marks a significant moment of progress for the West Winds Estate, emphasising the values of collaboration, cultural renewal and peacebuilding.”
Local groups, including the Newtownards Cultural Society, have supported this initiative and local councillor Steven Irvine is also in favour of the project.
“By replacing divisive symbols with shared history and inclusive imagery, the estate takes an important step toward becoming a more welcoming and user-friendly space for all,” said Mr Irvine.
“This is about moving forward while respecting the past and creating a community where everyone feels they belong.”
Eileen Thompson, Housing Executive Area Manager said the project is a great example of community leadership and represents a significant milestone in a broader programme of reimaging and regeneration plans for this area.
“It will hopefully ensure future generations feel proud and safe living in, and visiting, West Winds,” she said.
