PORTAFERRY councillor Joe Boyle has hit out at the Department for Infrastructure (DFI) over what he described as ‘unacceptable’ communication surrounding proposed fare increases for the Strangford Ferry service.
Mr Boyle, who chairs the Strangford Lough Ferry Service Working Group, said he was ‘very disappointed’ to learn of a second consecutive year of price hikes without prior consultation.
“Let me be clear, the management and employees operating the ferry service are highly respectful, obliging and always implement their duties in a professional manner,” said Mr Boyle.
“However, as chairperson of the Strangford Lough Ferry Service Working Group I am very disappointed to learn of the proposed price increase for the second consecutive year.
“Regular users are left with no alternative but to absorb the costings as it is a service, in the absence of a bridge, that local people simply need to avail of.”

He criticised the ‘lack of transparency’ from DFI officials, saying: “The lack of transparency is really unacceptable, particularly with no prior notice from ‘decision makers’ to elected members from both councils bordering and participating as members of the Strangford Lough Ferry Service Working Group.”
Mr Boyle said the group plays a key role in representing constituents and promoting tourism on both sides of the lough. “I believe the Minister (Liz Kimmins) and or her officials could and should have informed elected members of the proposed increases for the second consecutive year and the reasons as to why this increase is necessary,” he said.
Highlighting financial pressures on residents, he added: “Without such information I would certainly oppose any increase, particularly within a location and regular customer base where residents are struggling.”
He concluded: “Clarity is required as to how often the Minister and her officials propose increasing fares and the reasoning. Without transparency and clarity I strongly oppose any suggested increases.”
