A YOUNG North Down seconds side came out on top in a tight contest with an experienced CSNI outfit at the Green on Saturday.
Bowling first, North Down struggled in wet conditions for the latter half of the 40-over innings, as the visitors’ David Kennedy and veteran Goodall combined for a 100- run partnership, registering a competitive total of 228, helped by some 37 home extras.
With the ball, Luke Crothers opened the attack and was the standout bowler, taking two wickets for only 24 runs in his eight-over spell.
Joel Parker also got in on the wicket-taking act, claiming four of his own, yet the home side were disappointed with their bowling and fielding efforts, which continue to gift opponents needless runs each week.
North Down started well with the bat, as Hammy Coulter and young Daniel Pooler found the boundary regularly, racing to a 100-run partnership in only 16 overs.
Pooler departed on 46, when looking set for a big score, and Coulter continued the North Down progress alongside Isaac Webster, bringing the tally to 152 in 27 overs, before he lost his wicket for 61.
Two quick wickets, at the expense of Harry Heron and Will Park, gave the visitors hope and when veteran Ryan Haire went for only 14, North Down needed 30 from the last five overs.
With his team in need of a hero, Crothers stepped up, and capping a fine day with a score of 43 not out from 32 balls, ensuring the home win alongside Fraser Mitchell, after Zac Parker had been dismissed.
The win was secured with three balls to spare, as the seconds continued their progress, with all involved getting an opportunity to bat and bowl during the match.
