STEP inside Donaghadee’s historic lighthouse as part of the town’s RNLI Open Day this Saturday.
As one of the highlights of the open day, the lighthouse will be open from 12noon to 4pm; it is the first time the public will get the chance to see inside the landmark for a number of years.
There will also be a host of stalls, live music, water safety demonstrations, at the harbour area, from 11am to 5pm. All donations will go towards supporting the RNLI’s lifesaving work.
Donaghadee Lifeboat Station will be open to visitors from 1pm to 4pm, giving people the chance to meet the volunteer crew, hear first-hand about their lifesaving work and even step aboard the lifeboat for a closer look.
The lighthouse opening has been organised by the Donaghadee Heritage Preservation Company in partnership with the Sir Samuel Kelly project.
Lighthouse visitors can enjoy spectacular views from the top while discovering a unique piece of Donaghadee’s maritime heritage.
Every child who completes the climb will receive a certificate of achievement and all donations will support the RNLI and its lifesaving work at sea.
Visitors can look out for an exciting lifeboat display in the harbour and can learn more about staying safe on and around the water through a series of informative demonstrations, while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere around the harbour.
Adding to the lively festival atmosphere, the Ards Peninsula u3a ukulele group will entertain visitors, while a harbour market will showcase local crafts, artisan products, gifts, food and sweet treats.
The Donaghadee Summer Festival will also be officially launched – popular family event that promises a great day out for people of all ages.
The picturesque harbour is the place to be for anyone interested in maritime history, keen to learn more about water safety, or explore the lifeboat station and lighthouse.
