A CORNERSTONE of local life for four decades, SuperValu Comber, has marked its 40th anniversary with a lively day of celebrations, highlighting its deep roots in the town.
Originally opened in 1986 as Wellworths, the store joined SuperValu in 1996 — the same year the brand expanded into Northern Ireland, now marking 30 years in the region.
The milestone was celebrated with a family fun day featuring competitions for local schoolchildren, customer prizes and a host of in-store activities.
Long-serving staff were also recognised, with colleagues presented with anniversary cards and flowers in appreciation of their contribution.
Among those honoured were Margaret Brown and Mandy Alexander, who have worked at the store since opening day. Between them, they have given an extraordinary 80 years of service, with Margaret even celebrating her 20th birthday while on the job in 1986.
Raymond Barr, Store Manager at SuperValu Comber, said the store has been part of Comber for 40 years, and that’s entirely thanks to the loyalty of customers and the dedication of staff.
“We have a total of 15 team members with more than 10 years’ service each, and a combined 371 years between them,” he said.
“Having colleagues who have been with us this long and some since the very beginning, is incredibly special and speaks volumes about the role this store plays in the community.”
Oliver Martin, Head of Company-Owned Stores at Musgrave NI, said SuperValu Comber is a ‘fantastic example’ of what community retail is all about.
“We’re proud to celebrate 40 years of serving Comber and to recognise the colleagues who have made this store such an important part of everyday life in the town.
“It’s particularly fitting to mark the success of such a long-standing store during SuperValu’s 30th anniversary year in Northern Ireland. The brand continues to champion local suppliers and producers across the region, working with more than 3,000 local farmers and over 140 local suppliers, and we’re excited about what the future holds.”
Beyond retail, the store continues to support local groups and charities, raising £14,721 for Action Cancer since 2019, helping fund vital screening services across the region.
