ONE of Northern Ireland’s most iconic music events is tuning up for a milestone year, as the Ards International Guitar Festival returns to Newtownards for a spectacular 30th anniversary celebration.
Running from April 15-19, the Festival will once again transform the town into a hub of world-class music, with a standout line-up of international stars and local talent. The festival is organised by Ards and North Down Council.
Opening the celebrations is renowned French guitarist Pierre Bensusan, performing at Queen’s Hall as part of his 50th anniversary world tour.
Widely known as ‘Mister DADGAD’, his set will also feature a special on-stage conversation with George Lowden and Aaron Lowden, exploring his long-standing connection with the famous Lowden guitar brand.
Jazz fans can look forward to the return of Martin Taylor, who brings his new solo show Standards to Newtownards, promising an evening of masterful playing and storytelling spanning his six-decade career.
Also featuring is acoustic sensation Andy McKee, known for his percussive style and global online following. He will be joined by support act David Browne Murray for what is expected to be one of the festival’s standout performances.
Closing the festival is local favourite Ricky Warwick, returning to the Queen’s Hall with The Fighting Hearts. Known for his work with The Almighty, Black Star Riders and Thin Lizzy, Warwick will deliver a high-energy finale following the success of his 2025 album Blood Ties.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Ards Arts Centre will host The Luthier’s Tale exhibition, showcasing the craftsmanship of Avalon guitar makers and highlighting the area’s rich guitar-building heritage.
Festival Director Emily Crawford said: “We are delighted to be marking such a significant year for the festival. The 2026 programme celebrates the incredible diversity of the guitar – from classical to jazz, blues, folk, contemporary and rock – with some very special nods to the artists, makers and audiences who have shaped the past three decades.”
