Harrier Adam conquers ultra test

Adam McKee having completed the Arc 100 ultra race in Cornwall.

BALLYDRAIN Harriers’ Adam McKee was among more than 500 hearty souls to tackle the UK’s toughest winter 100-mile ultra foot race last weekend.

The Arc 100 takes in elevation gains of 4,250 metres and it is not for the faint hearted. The race, a unique point-to-point race along the most exposed sections of England’s South West Coast Path, means runners experience the stunning and dramatic ‘arc’ of Cornwall.

A strict 36-hour cut off point and large stretches of coastline between aid stations required runners to be self-sufficient for long periods of time.

A total of 259 runners went on to complete the course. The men’s race was won by Britain’s Lewis Ryan in 19.22.35 with Noor Van Der Veen of the Netherlands taking the women’s race in 22.30.44.

Huge congratulations to Ballydrain Harrier Adam McKee, who endured and completed the gruelling race in 31.48.04.

Elsewhere, Ballydrain trio Lesley Mooreland, Valerie Gibson and Michael Gibson were in Spain to complete the 30th Seville Half Marathon, the flattest half marathon course in Europe.

The race was won by Kenyan athlete Bravin Kiprop in under one hour (59.21) with a new women’s record set by Ethiopian athlete Alemtsehay Bimr Zerihun who crossed the line in 1.07.59 breaking the previous course record by 30 seconds.

First home for Ballydrain was Lesley (2.29.39) followed by Valerie (2.37.32) and Michael (2.46.05). Well done to all.

Ballydrain Harriers welcome all new members and anybody interested in joining can contact the club secretary at Ballydrain.secretary@outlook.com.
