A NEWTOWNARDS based junior football club is to launch a second girls’ team this weekend.
Based at Scrabo Presbyterian Church, Scrabo Academy FC was only established in May 2024 but currently has more than 100 registered members with nine teams playing each week in the Irish FA’s Small Sided Games (SSG) programme.
The club, which has purchased each child’s playing kit at no cost to parents, also offers a weekly sub of just £3 as it strives for participation for all.
Scrabo Academy’s development officer, Craig Horner has recently completed his UEFA B licence and is always on hand to help with the progress and development of each child at the club.
Following a significant increase in girls’ numbers, the club has taken the step to install Dean Russel as head coach of the girls’ section and implement girls’ only training.
A second girls’ team at Scrabo is due to launch this weekend. The girls picked a pink kit to highlight confidence and also chose the Little Heroes charity to wear on the front of their kit, vowing to help raise much-needed funds for the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.
The girls’ section recently completed a bucket collection at an Ards FC match and raised close to £400 for the charity.
Scrabo Academy trains on Monday and Thursday evenings and always welcomes new players of all abilities to come for a taster session. For more information, visit the club Facebook page or contact club coordinator Vickie on 07739 693 418.
