ARDS and Bangor Mizukara Karate Club’s Amy Adair has secured a gold medal at the WUKF World Karate Championships in Romania.
To make the success even more sweet, Adair’s clubmate and training partner, Levi Kane, claimed thesilver medal inthe same event, the ladies’ wado ryu kata.
Having taken silver in the same category in 2023, Adair was delighted to get her hands on gold this time aroudn, saying: “To win the world title this year is just fantastic.”
In the ladies’ sanbon team rotation kumite (fighting), the Mizukara duo joined forces with their Irish teammate, Erin McCole, and fought their way to a semi-final against the USA.
Despite narrowly missing out on a place in the decider, they were still delighted
to claim a bronze medal for their efforts.
Mizukara head coach David Brashaw said he is ‘over the moon’, with the results.
“Amy and Levi have been training with us since they were children,” he said. “To have Amy as world champion, Levi in the silver medal beside her and adding the world bronze in the ladies
kumite is simply stunning.
“I could not be more proud of and delighted for them both. They are superb ambassadors for our sport.
“The event was massive and live streamed around the world. Many of our members watched and cheered from their homes – a memory that I believe will inspire many of our young students.
Brashaw added: “I would especially like to say a massive thank you to my fellow Irish coach, Martin McCole, for all his support in getting the squad ready for Romania.
“The Irish squad had their most successful World Championships, ending high up on the medal table. This could not have been possible without the dedicated team supporting our athletes.”
