STRANGFORD MLA Nick Mathison has praised a Newtownards community initiative after visiting Warehouse Re-Loved in the town centre.
The Alliance MLA called into the new South Street shop to meet volunteers and learn more about its work supporting local residents.
“The new shop on South Street is a fantastic addition to the town, helping support people who may be struggling financially, anyone looking for a bargain and making an important contribution to environmental sustainability,” he said.
“It’s clear how much of a difference this service is making, and how important it is for many locally. What stood out is how accessible it is, people are simply asked for a donation based on what they can afford.”
During the visit, Mr Mathison was told the project is experiencing strong demand and is seeking additional donations to continue meeting local need.
“They are particularly looking for bric-a-brac, as well as clothing for teenagers and men, and I’d encourage anyone who can to donate items to help keep this support going. Alongside that, they also provide meals and food support through their base across the road at the old Molly Brown’s site, which many people rely on.
“It’s a really positive space and a credit to everyone involved. Please do support their work in whatever way you can, whether that’s donating or simply spreading the word.”
The MLA also reflected on the wider significance of such services in the community.
“It should give us pause that in 2026 services like this are needed at such scale.
“Community groups are stepping up, but they should not be left to meet such fundamental needs of this kind on their own.”
