Movilla – a school ‘rooted in the community’

MOVILLA High remains a school ‘rooted in our community’, the principal has said.

Dr Caroline Greer made the comment at the school’s recent prize-giving, where she also spoke of the ‘highly active and vibrant’ Parents, Staff and Friends Association (PSFA).Turning to the ‘Class of 2025’, Dr Greer described the Year 12 as having been a ‘super year group’ who ‘worked hard attending revision and booster classes throughout the year and most intensively during the examination season’.

She continued: “We were delighted that as a consequence of their hard work, their results met and exceeded all of our targets for this year group. In particular, 71% of pupils gained five A* to C grades. We had many pupils obtaining eight or more qualifications. Twenty pupils secured places in local schools to study level 3 A level courses. Twenty two pupils have started training or apprenticeships, 30 pupils are in Further Education colleges and other pupils have entered the workforce. “We are extremely proud of our Year 12 graduates and wish them every success as they continue their growth and development in the next steps of their careers.

”Dr Greer added how pupils’ success in and out of the classroom, was not only due to the ‘character and ambition of those young people’: “Our staff is quite simply second to none. The teaching staff is invested in each individual pupil, nudging their development with a firm yet nurturing hand. We expect high standards in every aspect of school life because we care about all our pupils. We demand the pupils give their best because we believe they deserve the very best of futures. Please take a moment to applaud the professionalism and dedication of all our staff team.

”The Movilla principal noted the majority of pupils enjoyed the school’s ‘rich and varied range of extra-curricular activities’, including art, drama, dance, Scripture Union, football, boxing, Minecraft, table tennis, and netball.

Dr Greer said: “In addition, we are delighted that our breakfast club continues to thrive. It is a vitally important facility accessible to all pupils in the morning before school, with drinks, toast and sometimes special treats available to prepare our pupils for learning. We thank Ms June Stone for her daily commitment to this throughout the year.”

Earlier in her address, Dr Greer welcomed Ulster Unionist leader and Strangford MLA Mike Nesbitt, who is chair of the school’s Board of Governors and guest speaker, former pupil and Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton.
