ANOTHER intimidating paramilitary mural in Newtownards’ West Winds estate looks set to be replaced by a new image representing the Battle of the Boyne and King William of Orange.
The idea of murals depicting gunmen belongs to a ‘bygone era’, according to Newtownards Cultural Society, which has been replacing murals throughout the estate with ‘positive and historically focused artwork’.
A meeting was held last week when variations of historical images were assessed following the replacement of six small paramilitary murals last year by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.
The meeting is part of a consultation process to continue that work. The latest mural to be replaced is a UVF image on the gable wall of a house in Blenheim Drive depicting two paramilitaries in balaclavas, one of whom is pointing a handgun.
A spokesman for the Society said the project remains at an early stage, and the group is currently investigating potential funding streams to support this ‘significant piece of work’.
“Murals depicting gunmen belong to a bygone era and the focus must now be on building a better future through education and engagement with young people,” said the spokesman.
The Society said the work would not be possible without the ‘support, guidance, and experience of the West Winds Development Association’, with both organisations continuing to work closely together, demonstrating that ‘real progress comes from collaboration and shared purpose’.
The spokesman said: “As part of this joint vision, the Cultural Society is planning a series of educational events for all members of the community, from young people to older residents.
“The group stresses that while it is important to move forward, it is equally important to remember and learn from the past — from the early wars of 1690, through the world wars, and of course the Troubles.”
The Society has already delivered several small events within the community and, with the support of the West Winds Development Association, intends to expand this programme as the project progresses. “Together, both groups are committed to continuing this journey and bringing the community along with them every step of the way,” the spokesman added.
Images being considered include colourful portrayals associated with loyalism, including the Battle of the Boyne and William of Orange and Queen Mary.
Some options carry famous quotations including, ‘the enemy made some resistance but at length gave way and we routed them entirely’ – as King Billy wrote to Queen Mary after the landmark battle on July 1st, 1690. Newtownards councillor, Steven Irvine said ‘it’s a great idea and shows we’re moving on’ with imagery in the estate.
The Independent politician said he hoped the first educational event will take place within the new year. He added that he was hopeful of funding options coming forth in the near future, which would help kickstart the process to decide on an artist to create the mural.
Strangford MP Jim Shannon has welcomed the reimaging project taking place in the West Winds.
“I was pleased to hear that the mural which depicts a dark time is to be replaced with a much more culturally expressive and warm image,” he said.
“I am thankful to see the move towards an expression of the best of our culture and heritage and thank all of those that have been involved in the work behind the scenes to bring this change about.
“This takes a lot of community engagement and discussion and those conversations have brought about a good result.”
