Phoenix call halt to North Down Irish Cup run as Comber men make up league ground

HAVING overcome Leinster Premier League opposition in the shape of Balbriggan to reach the last eight of the Irish Senior Cup, North Down were out to repeat the trick when they visited Phoenix on Sunday.

But they would find themselves on the other end of things this time around as the Dubliners, thanks to a seven-wicket victory, joined Ulster duo CIYMS and Instonians as well as Merrion in the competition’s semi-finals.

North Down 172 (44.2 overs, A Shields 56, M Aahil 33, J Shannon 23; J Lalor 3-42, B White 2-23, A Sidhu 2-46) Phoenix 173-3 (34.4 overs, J Lalor 48, L Shields 41, G Dockrell 31 not out, S Getkate 21 not out)

TWENTY-FOUR hours earlier, an unbeaten century from Ani Chore against strugglers Carrickfergus ensured that North Down moved above Lisburn and Muckamore on net run rate to go third in the NCU Premier League.

The win also saw Irish international Craig Young take four wickets on his first appearance for the club.

Carrickfergus 175 (34 overs, S Gordon 40, R Haasbroek 24, CJ Van der Walt 30, P Sharma 38*, C Young 4-49, J Corbett 3-27)

North Down 180-3 (36.4 overs, M Aahil 27, A Chore 106*, J Shannon 26*, CJ Van der Walt  2-41)
