A Newtownards woman is overjoyed after groundbreaking 3D surgery transformed the life of her beloved dachshund, Mysha, restoring her ability to run and play.

For years, the five-year-old pup struggled with severe limb deformities, suffering from collapsed front wrists, dislocated kneecaps, and painful arthritis. Her mobility was severely limited, and she relied on painkillers and joint supplements just to get by.

However, thanks to the expertise of Northern Ireland Veterinary Specialists (NIVS) and cutting-edge 3D technology from Vet3D, Mysha has received a life-changing surgical correction, allowing her to move freely once again.

From Pain to Possibility: Mysha’s Journey

When Mysha’s condition worsened, owner Elaine Keenan feared there was no solution for her pet’s debilitating forelimb deformity. But after a visit to her local vet, she was referred to NIVS in Hillsborough, where a team of specialist veterinary surgeons conducted CT scans to assess the damage.

The scans revealed:
Severe osteoarthritis and wrist joint collapse due to forelimb growth deformity
Bilateral kneecap dislocation, forcing extra weight onto her already painful front legs

Determined to help, the team at NIVS collaborated with Vet3D’s Bill Oxley to create a custom 3D-printed surgical plan. This advanced technology allowed them to digitally map out Mysha’s precise bone realignment and joint fusion before surgery.

Complex 3D Surgery: A Game-Changer for Veterinary Medicine

To correct Mysha’s crippling mobility issues, vets performed two separate surgeries—one on each front leg, with a four-week gap between procedures.

Each operation lasted two hours, during which surgeons:
🔹 Realigned Mysha’s bones using 3D-printed surgical guides
🔹 Fused her wrist joints with custom-designed steel plates and 19 screws in each leg

Immediately after the first surgery, Mysha showed signs of relief, and within days, she was walking on all four legs again.

Now, just six weeks post-surgery, she continues to recover smoothly with physiotherapy—and for the first time in years, she’s able to run, play, and enjoy life pain-free.

A Bright Future for Mysha

Veterinary surgeon Darren Barnes, who led Mysha’s treatment, expressed optimism about her recovery but noted she still has a long journey ahead. Later this year, she will return to NIVS for further treatment on her dislocating kneecaps.

For Elaine, seeing Mysha thrive again has been nothing short of miraculous:

“Poor Mysha’s legs used to turn out at right angles, like a seal’s flippers. She struggled to walk and dragged herself around. After multiple vet visits and even hydrotherapy, I was put in touch with Darren—and it changed everything.”

“She’s a different wee dog now. She plays with her toys, enjoys walks on the beach, and keeps up with our other dogs. It’s incredible.”

Advancing Veterinary Care with 3D Technology

This pioneering 3D surgery highlights the power of advanced veterinary medicine and how technology is revolutionizing pet healthcare. NIVS and Vet3D’s collaboration is paving the way for more pets like Mysha to regain their mobility, independence, and quality of life.
