Rhys upbeat as he starts on road back to fitness

RHYS McClenaghan says he’s on the road to recovery after undergoing surgery for a shoulder injury last week.

The Olympic champion gymnast (26), who has not competed since completing the sport’s grand slam with pommel horse gold in Paris last summer, has confirmed he will miss the World Championships in Indonesia in October.

McClenaghan won back-to-back world titles in 2022 and 2023 and also has three European crowns to his name.

In a social media post, the Ards man said he had been ‘struggling with this injury for a while now’ but is determined to maintain his status as ‘the best in the world at what I do.’

“This is the reality of sport, and I love all of the challenges it throws my way. To have the good days, you also have to have the bad days,” he added.

“I know that when I’m back competing in front of millions again and I finish that routine, it’s going to feel so much sweeter.”
