Shannon selected by DUP to fight Strangford election

Jim Shannon is congratulated by DUP leader Gavin Robinson after being selected for the election.

AS expected the DUP has selected sitting MP Jim Shannon to contest the Strangford constituency poll at the forthcoming general election.

Mr Shannon, who was first elected to Parliament in May, 2010, was selected unopposed by the party’s Strangford Association at a meeting last week.

The Ards peninsula resident said it was ‘an absolute privilege’ to be selected to be the party candidate in the next election.

Although I was the only one who stood for selection, it remains fantastic to know I have the support and trust of my party members and colleagues,” he said.

It is not possible to do my job to the best of my ability without my colleagues and fellow members, and it is truly my hearts desire and passion to make a positive contribution and strengthen the communities of Strangford, the DUP in Strangford and furthermore, the position of Northern Ireland within the Union.”

Mr Shannon said he is looking forward to the months ahead, but said he will continue to serve the local community through his constituency office.

“I was thankful to our interim party leader Gavin Robinson who came down to carry out the selection process and gave an encouraging word to the Strangford Association about how we can and are moving forward,” he said.
