THERE was a surprise for Millisle native, Ethel Phillips, when her sons organised a party to mark her 100th birthday.

Ethel (neé Campbell), was born on January 30, 1926, the youngest of six children to parents David and Minnie.

After her marriage, Ethel went on to have four sons – Sammy, Rab, William and Gary.

She moved to Dundonald and made her home there for 62 years; in 2023, she became a resident of Lime Tree Residential Home, where she was treated to a surprise party to celebrate her centenary birthday.

Ethel is grandmother to 15 grandchildren, and has 10 great-grandchildren, and was overwhelmed at being the centre of attention on her very special day.
