SIX Ulster Criterium titles were contested in a great series of races on a closed-road circuit through Newtownards town centre on Wednesday night.
The event drew large crowds and strong fields and was headlined by the Men’s C1/C2 race over 40 minutes plus three laps, incorporating both the Ulster Senior and Junior Championships.
Racing was intense from the outset, with Lindsay Watson (Powerhouse), James Armstrong (Molen Sporters), and Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles) holding a small advantage for several laps. With five laps to go, things came together again, setting up a dramatic sprint finish. Watson surged ahead in the closing metres to claim the title, just edging out James McKenny (Moynalty CC) and Jack Kennedy (Dan Morrissey). Armstrong finished fifth and was crowned top junior.
The Women’s Ulster Championship was combined with the Men’s C3 event, covering 30 minutes plus three laps. North Down CC’s Jemma Speers took the women’s title with a strong solo ride, followed by Rachell Newell (McConvey Cycles CC) and Claire Richardson (Killinchy CC). In the C3 race, Jamie Clarke (North Down CC) crossed the line first, ahead of Ricky Topping (Killinchy CC) and Lee Harvey (VC Glendale). Local rider Kieran McKenna was cheered home as the best-placed Ards CC competitor.
Earlier in the evening, a series of youth races took place. Among the standout performances were Jamie Rockett (Ards CC), winner of the Under 16 race, and Kealan Doherty (Foyle CC), who led home the Under 14 field. Jake McKee (VC Glendale), Kiyomi Tosh (Ballymena RC), and Thomas Crymble (Apollo CT) were among the younger category winners.
The event was a true community effort, made possible by the dedicated organising committee, generous sponsorship from Ards and North Down Borough Council, Formation Works and Jubilee Veterinary Centre and the vital support of St John Ambulance, marshals, commissaires and volunteers. Special thanks also go to The Belgian Project for commentary and photos, Ian Barfoot for photo-finish timing, the road closure team and all the riders and spectators who supported the event.
