LOCAL councillors have given their backing to a ‘trucking’ event taking place in June at Kirkistown race track, near Cloughey.
Ards and North Down Mayor Gillian McCollum and councillors Pete Wray and Joe Boyle recently joined with the committee of ‘Trucks at the Track’ to launch this year’s event which will take place on June 13 and 14.
Registration is now open for vehicles to be part of the showpiece which involves family entertainment for all ages and ends with a convoy through the Ards peninsula.
Committee chairman Gareth Blaine said it is the third year of the event which is expanding in size and attendance each year.
“We have added to our committee and are working alongside more supporters and partners to continue building and improving the show,” said Gareth.
“During one of many meetings we came up with the Truck Run and Light Show idea and to extend the event over two days instead of one. We wanted to draw people from across Ards and North Down as well as further afield to the event.
“We knew we needed to hold a fun day for the whole family and it proved successful last year so would like to keep doing this for many years to come. This all came to reality last year as we had entrants from Scotland, Ireland and Wales attending. We are expecting them and more to return this year, something we are very happy about.”
Mr Wray said the event has grown to be one of the most popular dates in the calendar across the Ards peninsula.
“This is all down to the hard work of the volunteers,” he said.
Mr Boyle also praised the group and highlighted the event’s potential for growth.
“An extremely committed small but enthusiastic group of people have the potential to have the largest ‘Trucks At The Track‘ event in Ireland,” he said.
“It is exciting that there is a strong bond and exciting working relationship with the management of the Kirkistown race track, probably the best venue in Ireland, offering an extensive hard standing venue incorporating both tarmac concrete surfacing along with hospitality requirements.”
