THE Band of the Royal Marines Scotland will be in Newtownards week for Veterans’ Day.
Ards and North Down Council will partner with the Royal British Legion to host the event in Conway Square, on Sunday, October 6.
The band will parade from Court Square at 3pm, via Court Street and South Street, to Conway Square where it will be received by the Lord Lieutenant of County Down. Following a Mayoral welcome, a Beating Retreat will take place.
The Mayor of Ards and North Down Alistair Cathcart, said the Veterans’ Day event has been running for several years and provides the community with the opportunity to recognise the ‘invaluable contribution’ of men and women from across the borough who have served their country, both at home and abroad.
“The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines Scotland will be performing this year,” he added. “This band is one of five that make up the musical wing of the Royal Navy. They play a crucial role in boosting troop morale, supporting international diplomacy, and paying tribute to their fallen comrades.
“It has been six years since the band last visited our borough so I will be delighted to welcome them back to Newtownards.”
Parking bays at the bottom of Conway Square, together with four spaces at Wrights Arcade, will be closed from noon on Sunday, October 6 to facilitate the event.
Following the conclusion of the ceremony at approximately 4pm, the band will follow a return route from Conway Square to Court Square via High Street, Mill Street, Gibson’s Lane, Regent Street, Frances Street, Castle Place and Castle Street.
