A STRANGFORD MLA has commended the work of Exploris Aquarium after three seals arrived from Scotland this week.
Welcoming the new additions was DUP Assemblyman, Harry Harvey, who recently visited the Portaferry based sanctuary.
Said Mr Harvey: “It’s been great to pay Exploris a visit today and get up close with its three new residents.
“After much hard work, I am delighted that the seals destined for Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry have arrived safe and sound.
“They were previously residing in a sanctuary in England after their enclosure in St Andrews Aquarium, Scotland, was destroyed in one of the storms last winter.
“Issues with Protocol related paperwork were threatening the likelihood of the seals being able to cross to NI – which would have resulted in them being euthanised.
“Working with UKGov and DAERA we were able to ensure their safe arrival to their new home, here in Strangford.
“I’m sure they will bring much joy and entertainment to visitors to Exploris and I am pleased that, working together, we have been able to ensure these beautiful animals have a future here in Northern Ireland.”
