A FANTASTIC day of riding and fundraising took place at Whitespots Trial Park near Conlig on Sunday.
The event, which was hosted by the Moto Trial NI club to support Ireland’s Trials des Nations team ahead of their trip to Italy this September, drew 54 riders and six practice entrants, with competitors travelling from across the island.
Competition was fierce across all grades. In the Semi-Expert class, Ben Johnston (Dungannon) secured the win with just five marks lost, narrowly beating Alex Andrews (Groomsport) on six. Sam Hampshire took third on 13 marks.
The Clubman grade saw veteran rider Phillip McClurg take top honours on two marks, ahead of Alan Young (five) and Jack Sloan (seven). Special mention goes to Davy Gault, who rode his Mono Yamaha to fourth despite a dramatic five-mark mishap.
The biggest class of the day, Sportsman, had six riders finish clean: Gary Woods, George Robinson, Bailie Thompson, Richard McConaghie, Nigel Mowbrey, and Chris Hampshire. The tie-breaker went to Chris for travelling the furthest.
In the youth categories, Youth B winner Tom Stevenson impressed with a perfect score, followed by Toby McKimm (five) and Jenny Crawford (10). Youth C saw Harry Annette top the standings with seven marks, ahead of Ewan Bublis (14) and Ben Griffiths (18).
The trial followed a relaxed format with two laps of eight sections, catering to all abilities. After a morning of riding, competitors enjoyed hot dogs, refreshments, and even an ice cream van before the OHA-sponsored 2024 Summer Series prize-giving. The club thanked Jonny Annett of OHA for his continued support.
Spectators were also treated to a thrilling demonstration by top riders including Stuart McClurg, Jay Pyper, Josh Hanlon and Jonny Lunney, who showcased the level of skill required for elite competition.
Moto Trial NI expressed gratitude to all participants, volunteers and observers who made the day possible. Thanks to their efforts, £1,000 was raised for the Irish TDN team. Special thanks went to the observers, catering team, and organisers for their hard work.
Moto Trial NI’s next event is the Classic Kickstart Trial at the Classic Bike Festival in Bishopscourt from August 1 to 3.
