DEVELOPERS who want to build luxury homes at the site of an ancient wood outside Newtownards are to appeal planning refusal.
The decision by Ards and North Down Council not to grant approval for homes at Tullynagardy Wood will be heard by a Planning Appeals Commissioner on Wednesday, April 29.
Previously, planning permission was declined after councillors rejected the advice of council officers and declined permission to build on the site, citing its role as an historic piece of native woodland and home to many native species of flora and fauna, including the endangered red squirrel.
Speaking in advance of the hearing, Alliance MLA Nick Mathison, who has stood with local residents in a lengthy campaign to protect the site, said the refusal must be upheld and the site protected.
He said: “I have consistently taken the position that these plans are not appropriate for Tullynagardy Wood. My clear view is that the whole site is a woodland ecosystem and should be treated as open space not suitable for development.
“It has been my privilege to stand alongside residents who do not want this development to proceed, and I hope that the decision taken by PAC [Planning Appeals Commission] will support the objectors’ position which is born out of a deep concern and respect for their local environment.”
Alliance Newtownards councillor and Deputy Mayor Vicky Moore added her ongoing support for the residents opposing these plans.
“The local community living nearby this woodland have been resolute in their opposition from day one. The decision now rests with the PAC who will hear the cases of the developer, the council and objectors on Wednesday.
“I sincerely hope the final outcome of that process is one which ensures the protection of this woodland area and not its destruction,” she said.
